With a population of more than 500,000 people, Hannover is the capital of the German state of Lower Saxony. It is famous for its large trade fairs such as Expo 2000, the annual CeBit and Hannover Fairs with more than 200,000 visitors.
Hannover is also a historic city and provides a variety of tourist attractions. The Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen have been established in the 19th century. They attract more than 500,000 visitors per year.
From 1698 until 1716, the famous philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz lived in a Renaissance townsman house in Hannover, which was built already in 1499 but destroyed during World War II. Reconstructed within the center of Hannover, this historic building serves today as meeting center. The city is well prepared to host international fairs and scientific conferences.
Hannover International Airport (IATA code: HAJ) has more than 5 million passengers per year and is served by 35 airlines, mostly from Europe.
High speed trains (ICE) to Hamburg, Frankfurt, Berlin, and Munich interconnect Hannover with other transportation hubs in Germany.
